Q. What should I do about the April 2007 freeze damage on my Japanese Maples?
A. Wait until June 2007 to determine what level of damage has occured, warmer weather as well as moisture will activate stems and branch buds for recovery. Keep in mind some large portions of the plant may be lost.
Q. What should I do with my Ash Trees with Emerald Ash Bore found now in Miami/Warren/Hamilton/Montgomery/Butler Counties in Ohio?
A. Emerald Ash Borer or EAB is a significant issue that will impact our enviroment in Ohio as well as the midwest for ever, if a solution is not found soon. Be sure to learn about this insect at our links section of this website. You have 3 choices, all of which can be used individually or together.
#1 Option is to Pretreat your Ash with a product like Merit. It is a preventive, not a cure-all. This product must be inside the tree well before EAB arrives, and it typically takes 2 years before enough dossage is inside to provide good control. Keep in mind once you pretreat you must continue this pretreatment program for the life of the tree or untill EAB is gone.
#2 option is to plant or understory plant a non-Ash species near or close by the position of the Ash tree. EAB doesn't effect over species of trees other than Ash [Fraxinus]. Consult with a ISA Certified Arborist for the best species and the right timing of planting time.
#3 Option is do nothing! This option maynot be advisable if you like summer shade!
